Sept 25, 2015 - In a repeat of 2013 Doug Stephens defeated Jim Florence for the singles championship. Doug continued his rebound after his win over Richard Mattson yesterday. This completes the season.

Sept 24, 2015 - Doug Stephens defeated Richard Mattson in a very interesting match in the first round of the singles playoffs. Mattson was 6 wickets ahead and had both balls in rover position. He staked one ball out and was not able to stake the other one out. Stephens was then able to control the court with two balls to one and enjoying two turns in a row in each cycle. He kept Mattson's lone ball well away from the stake while at the same time making his wickets. Mattson was left with long shots to the stake, which on several occasions missed by a thin hair, which would have one the game for him. But it was not to be. Stephens caught up and staked both of his balls out to win the match. Stephens goes on to play Jim Florence for the singles championship. The day and time are to be determined.

September 26, 2014 - A final note: It was a great season for croquet. The weather was good all year. No grass brownout. We had great league participation and three great tournaments. Thank you all for your participation and I hope you all return next year. And, thank you from Kiwanis as your league fees went to their children's fund.

A special thanks to Peggy and Richard Mattson for the work they did on the lawns. All year long they weeded, seeded, and mowed to achieve perfection. At the playoffs last night the grass was so evenly cut and thick that the balls just glided to their targets (at least for some of us). It took me several wickets to adjust to the perfection, but then I really appreciated it.

Next year we will try to repeat the success of this year. I am thinking of holding a Spring and Fall tournament for our club members only, and then maybe hold a Summer tournament for the best 12 players we can intice to play in it, from anywhere (including Canada). Maybe call it the Kiwanis Creek State Championship Tournament, or something similar. We can raise the fees and spend more money on prizes and food, as well as make some money for Kiwanis. I welcome your thoughts on this.

September 25, 2014 - 2014 League Playoff Finals results:

Singles League: Richard Mattson and Bruce Lanning played a highly contested game where the advantage shifted several times. With Mattson's red ball at rover and yellow on 11 he inadvertently hit his red ball into the stake, leaving his yellow ball at the mercy of Lannings two ball advantage. At the time Lanning had both blue and black on 10. It looked to everyone that this would change the game drastically since Lanning would have two turns to Mattson's one. However, Mattson made a great long shot hitting blue and was able to control the game enough to make wicket 12 and then stake out, winning the match. Congratulations to Richard.

Doubles League: Florence/Lanning was able to keep a comfortable lead throughout the game. Lanning finished with 12 and Florence with 11 giving them 23 points. Gettel complete 5 wickets and Stephens staked out at 13, giving them 18 wickets. Congratulations to Florence and Lanning.

September 25, 2013 - FYI !! Phase 1 of our lawn development is complete. The lawns were aerated yesterday and today Peggy broadcasted the fertilizer and Kentucky Blue grass seed. All we need to do now is watch Mother Nature transform our brown/spotchy lawns into beautiful green, thick croquet lawns. As a reminder, Phase 2 will be in the spring which will include rolling, additional spring fertilizer and possibly another aeration process. And, we will broadcast lime to give the lawns a dark green look. Thank you for your patience and trust in us to develop our lawns into a more consistent playing surface. Any questions/concerns please call us. Peggy and Richard

In the final round he scored an additional wicket and just missed the second to tie the game and force overtime. Stephens said "It took the best game I ever played to beat him". May 21, 2012 - Al Hitzelberger and Doug Stephens participated in a three day tournament at the Waterloo Croquet Club near Chelsea, Michigan last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Players from as far away as the Mission Hills Croquet Club in Southern California participated. Our duo didn't fare too well. Al won zero games in the upper flight, and Doug got a pity win in the lower bracket. However, the weather was real nice, we met some great new friends, and Doug learned a little more about the game and tournament play (Al already knew that stuff).

May 14, 2012 - Due to the changes to our playing courts, the upcoming holiday, hometown days, etc. we are canceling the Spring Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 26, 2012. We will still hold the tournament in September.

May 7, 2012 - The playing courts have been badly damaged by the recent storm. We have located another site at the rear of the park, but it needs mowing. The City is mowing around town now. If the area is mowed before 2:00 PM tomorrow we will play at 5:30 PM. Check back here tomorrow after 2:00 PM to make certain we are playing.

March 28, 2012 - Yesterday the lawn improvement work was done. The improvements are not dramatic, but they should provide improved playing conditions from last year. We hope the grass will be mature enough by early May to play on. Check back here for updates.

March 22, 2012 - On Tuesday, March 27, 2012 the playing lawns will receive some needed improvements. Ace Outdoor Services will be top dressing them with a mixture of topsoil and sand and then seeding them. This limited work is to just remove the bare spots (infamous North wicket #2) and smooth the bumps out of the lawns. It is a cheap quick fix, but it should make playing more enjoyable this summer.

Jim Florence has won all three doubles league championships, as well as last year's singles championship, since the club began last year. The overall championship game day and time will be announced later.

September 6, 2011 - Team Hitzelberger/Rodriguez defeated Gettel/Stephens in a marathon game of 4 hours. Gettel/Stephens was ahead up until the 11th wicket. But then the combination of Hitzelberger's skillful strategy and Rodriguez's excellent shot making pushed them to the win. The Gettel/Stephens loss placed them in a tie with Florence/Lanning in the final standings. Florence/Lanning had more points, which breaks the tie and makes them the Tuesday League Champions. Congradulations to Florence/Lanning.

Thursday, July 1, 2010 An email from Bill Darwin of the Waterloo Croquet Club.

Hi Doug,

I wanted to thank you and your group for your hospitality on tuesday, we had a great time and I feel we may have even helped you guys out a bit. Your court area does need some work but all in all its just fine for playing on and the best part is it doesn't cost you any money out of pocket or time to maintain where as my courts are nothing but maintenence and money out of pocket. The donations I get from my guys here doesn't come close to covering what it costs to keep up with the fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, mower gas and maintenence, hell it was 1400 just to get my reels rebuilt and sharpened to be able to mow 3-4 times a week in which I am the entire greenskeeping crew but I really love the game and want to keep it going and get as many new people involved as I can. We look forward to getting together with a group of four of you when you are eady, just give me a heads up maybe a weeks notice when you plan to come so I can get 3 others to show up. Thanks again Doug, Bill
